Towns across the region will mark Memorial Day and honor America’s fallen service members with parades, ceremonies and other events.

Gray 

Participants in American Legion Post 86’s annual Memorial Day Parade will organize at 10:30 a.m. and depart the Russell Street School at 11. The parade will head south on Route 26 toward Gray Center for a tribute at the Civil War statue. A ceremony will start at the Legion at 11:30 with a color guard, bands, Scouts and guest speaker Town Manager Deborah Cabana.

Starting at noon, the public is welcome to tour the Legion post, view antique cars and stay for a barbecue.

Naples 

The Naples-Casco-Raymond American Legion Post 155 is holding a Memorial Day Service at the Naples Village Green, corner of Lambs Mill Road and Route 302, at 11 a.m. on Monday.

New Gloucester 

New Gloucester’s annual Memorial Day Parade will start at the Memorial School at 9 a.m. and participants will start lining up at 8. The parade route proceeds north along Route 231 and then heads right on to Route 100. The procession will stop at the New Gloucester Veterans Monument Park for memorial services and brief remarks by several individuals.

The parade will continue to the Amvets Hall 0n Lewiston Road, where  refreshments will be served.

In case of inclement weather, the memorial service will occur inside the Amvets Hall. For more information or to sign up your organization to participate in the parade, call Willy Danforth at 777-4759.

Standish 

The Kenison-Hooper American Legion Post 128 will host a Memorial Day ceremony at the Standish Town Office on Monday starting at 8:30 a.m.. Post Commander Bruce Roubo expects the event to last about an hour, and for it to include local officials, including Rep. Lester Ordway and Town Council Chairwoman Kimberly Pomerleau. There will be a wreath laying outside rain or shine, but Roubo anticipates that the rest of the ceremony could be held indoors depending on the weather.

Windham 

The Field-Allen American Legion Post 148 is once again hosting several Memorial Day events over the course of the weekend, starting with an auxiliary-sponsored naturalization ceremony for new American citizens at 10 a.m. Friday at the Windham Veterans Center. On Saturday, the group is holding a food drive from 7 a.m. until 3 p.m. to benefit the local food pantry.

Post Adjutant Dave Tanguay said the Memorial Day parade will start promptly at 9:30 a.m. and follow its usual route from the Town Office to Windham High School, where there will be a 10 a.m. ceremony. He said that former U.S. Department of Defense official and politician Charlie Cragan is set to be the keynote speaker. Tanguay also expects a citation from Sen. Bill Diamond recognizing the legion post’s 80th anniversary.

The high school ceremony will culminate with a tolling of the bells for roughly 30 area veterans who have passed away in the last year.

Following the parade and ceremony, there will be an open house at noon at the Windham Veterans Center for a picnic-style lunch and wreath-laying ceremony.
