Re: Phil Hoose’s July 4 letter to the editor (“The need to rely on each other calls for an ‘Interdependence Day’ “):

Our family was traveling up to Swan Lake on July 4 to visit our friend’s lake house and enjoy the boat parade and fireworks when I missed the turnoff to their camp. Backing up in my truck, I didn’t see that I was heading off the road and, soon, a foot or two down an embankment. My truck ended up resting at an almost 45-degree angle, with some trees wedging it in.

After my family, including our 14-year-old beagle, scooted out of the car, a crowd of locals and visitors slowly pulled up and got out, and we began discussing the situation.

Twenty minutes later, we had permission from the property owner to cut one of the trees (with a chain saw I happened to be carrying), hitched one end of a rope to the rear of my truck and the other to a passer-by’s Jeep, slowly pulled the truck sideways to avoid damage to the body, and then carefully drove it out from the embankment.

I attempted to convey my deep thanks to everyone who had helped, and one of the gentlemen said to me, “Well, that’s what we’re here for, to help each other out.” It was a lovely sentiment and seemed very apropos of Mr. Hoose’s letter. Thanks again to everyone who helped out!
