It’s Open Farm Day in Maine today, and you’ve got many options of places to visit, where you can meet your farmer and learn something about how they grow the food that ends up on your plate. Maine’s Department of Agriculture, Conservation & Forestry has a listing of everything that’s open on its site.

But if this Sunday is already booked, try an event the following Saturday that involves a whole other kind of farming and harvest, the Maine Seaweed Fair in Rockland. The festival includes a talk by Orlando E. Delogu on the issue of intertidal ownership in Maine (a key question for some seaweed harvesters).

There will also be hands-on opportunities, such as a seaweed pressing workshop with Mary Jameson of Saltwater Studio, a cooking demonstration by Maine Coast Sea Vegetables and the use of seaweed in a skincare regime, with Michele Gilfoil of Planet Botanicals explaining the benefits of seaweed on the skin. — MARY POLS
