Conor McGregor will return to the sport Oct. 6 in Las Vegas with a bout against the UFC lightweight champion, Khabib Nurmagomedov.

McGregor won the featherweight and lightweight championships during his meteoric MMA career but hasn’t fought in the UFC since taking the lightweight belt from Eddie Alvarez in November 2016.

McGregor hasn’t competed at all since losing his lucrative boxing match against Floyd Mayweather in August 2017.

SOCCER

BRAZIL MEN: Brazil will meet El Salvador in a friendly in Washington D.C. next month.

The game will be held Sept. 11, four days after Coach Tite’s team takes on the U.S. in another friendly at East Rutherford, New Jersey.

MLS: Los Angeles FC acquired Brazilian defender Danilo Silva on a five-month loan from Internacional of Brazil.

BASKETBALL

NBA: The Atlanta Hawks signed center Alex Len, a 7-foot-1 Ukrainian who was the fifth overall pick in the 2013 draft by Phoenix but didn’t make much of an impact in five years with the Suns.

This past season he averaged 8.5 points and 7.5 rebounds in 69 games, including 13 starts.

The Dallas Mavericks re-signed backup center Salah Mejri, who will join former European teammate and rookie third overall pick Luca Doncic.

COLLEGE: Sarah Behn, the women’s coach at Brown University was charged with assaulting her husband.

HORSE RACING

HARNESS RACING: Atlanta will try to become the first filly to win the Hambletonian in 22 years when she takes on 17 rivals in trotting’s most prestigious event at the Meadowlands in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

Undefeated in five starts, the Rick Zeron-trained filly is the 3-1 second choice in the first of two $100,000 heats for 3-year-old trotters. The top five finishers in each elimination return later in the day for the $1 million final, which has a scheduled 5:14 p.m. post time.

JOCKEY HURT: Hall of Fame jockey Victor Espinoza is wearing a neck brace while recovering at his San Diego home after fracturing a vertebra during a training accident at Del Mar in California.

WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS: The top seeds, Tai Tzu Ying of Taiwann in the women’s division and Viktor Axelsen of Denmark in the men’s, were knocked out in the quarterfinals at Nanjing, China.

Tai lost for only the second time this year in 37 matches.

AUTO RACING

FORMULA ONE: Daniel Ricciardo of Australia is leaving Red Bull for Renault at the end of the season.

Ricciardo, who has won seven races since joining Red Bull in 2014, agreed to a two-year deal with Renault.

TENNIS

CITI OPEN: Greek teenager Stefanos Tsitsipas eliminated No. 3 seed David Goffin 6-3, 6-4 to reach the semifinals at Washington.

The 19-year-old Tsitsipas is coming off his first run to the fourth round at a Grand Slam tournament, last month at Wimbledon.

Andy Murray, the three-time major champion, cited fatigue when he pulled out of the Citi Open, hours before he was supposed to face 19-year-old Alex de Minaur for a semifinal berth. He also announced that he’s going to skip next week’s Toronto Masters.
