BOSTON — The Boston Red Sox placed Blake Swihart on the disabled list Friday and selected the contract of catcher Dan Butler.

Swihart was removed from Thursday night’s game with a hamstring injury. It doesn’t appear he’ll miss more than the required 10 days on the DL.

Sandy Leon will start at catcher in the remaining games against the Yankees this weekend, with Butler potentially getting an opportunity in Toronto or Baltimore next week. Butler has just seven games of major-league experience, having joined the Sox late in the 2014 season.

Butler, an undrafted free agent out of Arizona in 2009, has been a staple of Boston’s minor-league system for about a decade. Outside of a one-year stint in the Nationals’ organization in 2015, he has logged time at Pawtucket in each of the past nine seasons.

YANKEES: Right-hander Chance Adams is being called up to make his major league debut Saturday against Boston.

Left-hander J.A. Happ went on the 10-day disabled list with hand, foot and mouth disease and Luis Cessa pitched in relief during Thursday’s 15-7, series-opening loss to the Red Sox.

New York demoted Sonny Gray to the bullpen after his loss Wednesday to Baltimore and replaced him in the rotation with newly acquired Lance Lynn, who pitched 41/3 scoreless innings of relief against the Orioles.

New York recalled right-hander Tommy Kahnle from Scranton and optioned Cessa to its top farm team.

INDIANS: Andrew Miller was activated after being out because of inflammation in his right knee since May 26. The left-hander, who was on the 60-day disabled list, also missed time earlier in the season with a strained left hamstring.

Right-hander Zach McAllister, who was 1-2 with a 4.97 ERA in 41 appearances, was designated for assignment.

RAYS: Newly acquired outfielder Tommy Pham was placed on the 10-day disabled list because of a broken right foot.

Pham was hit on the foot by a pitch from Los Angeles Angels left-hander Andrew Heaney on Thursday. He had an MRI on Friday.

METS: The Mets placed left-hander Steven Matz on the 10-day disabled list with a flexor pronator strain in his left arm.

Matz and the team believe he will miss only one start.

PIRATES: Jung Ho Kang, who finished third in the NL Rookie of the Year voting in 2015, has undergone season-ending surgery on his left wrist.

The 31-year-old infielder had been playing with the Pirates’ Triple-A Indianapolis when he first started feeling pain in the wrist on June 20. When the pain continued while taking batting practice on Tuesday, Kang opted for surgery.
