BIDDEFORD — In honor of National Lighthouse Day, The Maine Lighthouse Trust is offering what it hopes will be Maine’s first lighthouse specialty license plate for free.

Visitors to www.MaineLighthouseTrust.org will have the cost of the specialty license plate pre-purchase paid for at no cost to them.

The Maine Lighthouse Trust is required to have 2,000 Maine residents with active vehicle registrations pre-order the new license plate prior to the Secretary of State drafting legislation and presenting it to the Maine Legislature for final approval.

The Maine Lighthouse Trust will distribute the accrued funds in the form of grants to statewide lighthouse organizations for the ongoing preservation, restoration and education/awareness of Maine’s historic sentinels.

It’s estimated that the lighthouse plate will raise in excess of $200,000 per year for Maine’s lighthouse community.

Maine Lighthouse Trust founder Sean P. Murphy says a donor has paid the $25 fee in honor of National Lighthouse Day.

“The limited supply of pre-paid specialty plates will advance our goal of obtaining the required 2000 Maine motorists interested in sporting Maine’s first Lighthouse specialty license plate,” he said.

And there is further benefit to having a specialty lighthouse license plate.

“Residents will be proud to display the new plates knowing they will be championing the mission to save and preserve Maine’s rich nautical heritage,” Murphy said.
