BRUNSWICK

If the ride down Mill Street seems unusually rough of late, it’s because crews are preparing to repave the busy stretch of road.

Workers started grinding up old layers of pavement Aug. 16, and have been leveling manholes and catch basins. They’ll start laying fresh pavement the end of September, according to the contractor.

Lane Construction, the company awarded a nearly $946,000 Maine Department of Transportation contract to do the work, will also reconstruct about a dozen sidewalk ramps.

Sal Salvaggio, the construction company’s assistant plant engineer, said all of the road work will happen between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. Sunday through Thursday.

The work should be done within the first couple weeks in October if the weather allows, according to Salvaggio.

“It’s a pretty quick project,” he said.

This paving project is separate from the improvements the transportation department has planned at the intersection of Mill, Pleasant and Stanwood streets. It has scheduled that estimated $1.35 million project for the 2019-20 fiscal year.

The state installed a temporary traffic light on Mill Street in February, stopping traffic that used to yield to vehicles turning off Stanwood Street.

Brunswick’s town engineer, Ryan Barnes, said the state is still studying how the temporary light is changing traffic at that intersection. Another public meeting is expected before that project takes place.

The temporary light on Mill Street could become a permanent fixture with the reconstruction of the intersection. The state wanted to see if the light would cause too much traffic to collect on Mill Street, the two-lane road connecting the four-lane Route 1 highway to Pleasant Street.

Town officials have said the transportation department will realign islands and change the geometry of the intersection to improve safety and traffic flow.
