James V. Porter, 93, of Wappingers Falls, passed away Wednesday, September 19, 2018, at Sapphire at Wappingers. He was born in Sag Harbor, N.Y., on October 21, 1924, the son of Benjamin and Margaret Porter.

He graduated from Pierson High School in 1942, immediately enlisted in the U.S. Navy, and served as Gunners Mate 1st class on the USS Bataan CLV-29 and fought in battles in Okinawa, Philippines, and the Mariana Islands, and was selected for Officers training in 1944.

He then attended Colgate University, completing his studies under the GI bill, and graduating in 1948.

In May 1952, he married Maureen Doyle of Woodridge, N.J.

He worked for 41 years for Liberty Mutual Insurance as a claims manager in Albany, N.Y., Brooklyn, and finally Poughkeepsie, N.Y. He resided in Brunswick, Maine after retirement.

Mr. Porter was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 1947, Brunswick, Maine, former lecture at St. Mary’s Church, Wappingers Falls, and St. Charles Church, Brunswick, Maine, a life member of New Hackensack Fire Co., Past President Town of Wappinger Little League, Past President Oakwood Knolls Civic Association, served on Town of Wappinger Zoning Board and planning board, a volunteer for Meals on Wheels, Brunswick, Maine,the Soup Kitchen, Brunswick, Maine, and volunteered at Mid Coast Hospital, Brunswick, Maine.

Surviving are his children, Stephen (Anita Hill) of Wappingers Falls, Claire Minunni (John) of Wappingers Falls, and Christopher Porter of Thomaston, Maine, grandchildren, Daniel Minunni, Diana Ryan, Catherine Minunni, Amanda Vallimont, Andrew Porter, and Dana Porter. He was predeceased by brothers, E. Benjamin Porter, and Eugene Porter.

Friends may call at the Delehanty Funeral Home, 64 E. Main St., Wappingers Falls, Sunday from 4 to 7 PM. A Mass of Christian burial will be offered Monday at 11:00 AM at St. Mary’s Church, Clinton Street, Wappingers Falls.
