BRUNSWICK — The NESCAC champion Bowdoin College women’s volleyball team will be the top seed at an NCAA regional hosted by Babson College, as the national committee announced the Division III Tournament field on Monday afternoon.

The Polar Bears are seeded first in the eight-team regional that will be hosted due to geographic reasons by second-seeded Babson this weekend.

Bowdoin will open play against Worcester State (23-10) on Friday in the first round, with the match set to begain at 12:30 p.m. If victorious, the Polar Bears will advance to play the winner of Eastern (25-6) vs. Johns Hopkins (21-7) in the second round (2:30 p.m). The other regional matchups include Wellesley (20-6) vs. Wentworth (25-4); and Babson (23-8) vs. The College of Mount Saint Vincent (14-16).

The Polar Bears (27-1), currently ranked 24th in the AVCA Division III poll, claimed their third NESCAC Championship on Sunday. This will be the fifth NCAA Tournament appearance for the Polar Bears and second in four years under head coach Erin Cady. The Polar Bears have advanced to the “Sweet Sixteen” three times and made their first-ever “Elite Eight” appearance in 2015, claiming the New England regional title over MIT.

More information about the regional, including a complete preview with links to live coverage, will be posted on GoUBears.com later this week.

Player of the Week

Bowdoin senior libero Lisa Sheldon has been named the NESCAC Player of the Week in selections announced by the conference following the league championship.

Sheldon helped lead the Polar Bears win their third NESCAC Championship with stellar defensive play last weekend. In three matches, Sheldon averaged six digs per set, including 29 in both the semifinal win over No. 5 Tufts and the title match against No. 3 Amherst. She leads the conference with 557 digs, and with 72 in three matches over the weekend, she became the fourth player in school history to surpass 1,500 digs in a career (1,568).
