BIDDEFORD – Southern Maine Health Care celebrated the 100th birthday of hospital volunteer Marjorie Oakes on Thursday with a good deal of fanfare.

Oakes has been volunteering at the hospital since 2005, providing more than 2,300 hours of service to date.

She greets and escorts patients at the front desk at SMHC Biddeford Medical Center and says she volunteers because she loves people and enjoys staying active.

Born in Westbrook, Oakes raised her family in Biddeford and now lives at the Paul Hazelton House in Saco.

When asked what her secret to living 100 years was, she kept it simple.

“You’ve got to keep moving,” Oakes said.
