BIDDEFORD — The Bowdoin College men’s basketball team scored 69 points in the first half and coasted to a 114-94 win over the University of New England on Tuesday evening.

The Polar Bears improved to 2-1, while the Nor’easters fell to 1-3.

With UNE holding an early 7-4 lead, Bowdoin used a 10-0 run, led by four points from Zavier Rucker, to take the lead for good.

After the Nor’easters cut the lead to 14-9, another 10-0 Bowdoin surge, capped by a Hugh O’Neil layup, pushed the lead to double figures.

The Polar Bears were on fire in the opening 20 minutes, going 25-of-36, including 16-of-18 from 3-point range. They also connected on nine trifectas to post 69 points in the period and owned a 69-38 halftime lead.

Bowdoin owned as much as a 35-point lead on its way to the win.

David Reynolds continued his hot play, scoring a game-high 26 points, including 6-of-8 from 3-point range and five rebounds. Rucker added 23 points, eight assists and five rebounds. O’Neil had a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds, while Sam Grad added 15 points off the bench.

Bowdoin finished at 58-percent shooting for the contest and held a 55-30 advantage in rebounding,

The Polar Bears head to Massachusetts on Sunday as they return to action at Babson at 2 p.m.

Women’s basketball

Bowdoin dismantled UNE, 106-55.

The second-ranked Polar Bears (3-0) finished four points shy of the program record for points in a game.

The Nor’easters fell to 2-3 with the setback.

After the hosts held a 2-1 lead in the opening moments, the Polar Bears took command with an 11-0 run to quickly push the lead to double figures. Bowdoin extended its lead to 25-7 after the first quarter and owned a 48-28 lead at halftime.

The third period was a clinic for the Polar Bears, who outscored UNE 38-16, including five 3-pointers in the period alone to put the contest out of hand.

Bowdoin led by as many as 56 points in the fourth quarter en route to the win.

Bowdoin shot a scalding 60.3-percent from the field, including 13-of-25 from 3-point range. UNE shot 36-percent from the field and committed 29 turnovers which Bowdoin cashed in for 37 points.

Six different Polar Bears saw double figures and every player on the roster scored in the victory. Bowdoin had 32 assists on 38 made field goals in the game. Abby Kelly led with 17 points in just 21 minutes of action, including six rebounds and three steals. Taylor Choate had 10 points and nine assists, while Maddie Hasson scored 15 points in 12 minutes of play. Hannah Graham (13), Sela Kay (12) and Moira Train (10) also reached double digits.

Bowdoin returns to action on Sunday afternoon in Morrell Gymnasium against MIT.

Men’s hockey

Bowdoin surrendered four second-period goals to nationally-ranked University of New England in a 7-1 loss.

The Polar Bears dropped to 1-2 as the eighth-ranked Nor’easters climbed to 6-1.

UNE scored the game’s first goal 15 minutes into the opening period. Bowdoin responded as Albert Washco recorded his first collegiate goal three minutes later to send the teams into the first intermission tied at 1-1.

The Nor’easters blew the game open in the second period, scoring four goals in the span of three minutes to take a commanding 5-1 lead after two. All four goals came on the power play for UNE.

The hosts added a goal under two minutes into the third period to extend their lead and pushed the tally to seven with four minutes remaining.

UNE outshot the Polar Bears by a 44-27 margin. Bowdoin went 0-for-4 on the power play.

Alex Zafonte made 37 saves in the Bowdoin net. Tate Sproxton made 26 stops for the Nor’easters.

The Polar Bears host Wentworth on Saturday at 4 p.m. in the opening day of the Bowdoin-Colby Faceoff Classic.
