CUMBERLAND — Derek Langhauser, president of the Maine Community College System and a Cumberland Foreside resident, is Gov. Janet Mills’ pick for chief legal counsel.
Mills announced his appointment Monday along with that of Deputy Legal Counsel Nancy Pistner, now chief deputy attorney general.
Langhauser and Pistner “have dedicated their careers to serving the people of Maine, and I am excited they will continue that service … in my office,” Mills said in a statement. “They are two of the sharpest legal minds in the state. Their wealth of experience, and their deep respect for the Constitution and the rule of law, will be a tremendous asset to the people of Maine in the coming years.”
“The opportunity to serve as legal counsel to Gov. Mills is a high privilege,” Langhauser said. “She and Ms. Pistner are themselves both excellent, experienced lawyers, so it will be an even greater privilege to have one for a client and one for a colleague.”
Langhauser, 56, has advised all three governmental branches. He was a clerk for two Maine Supreme Court justices, spent four years as constitutional counsel to Republican Gov. John McKernan, and 14 years as counsel to former U.S. Sen. Olympia Snowe, R-Maine.
