BRUNSWICK — Bowdoin College’s Jack Simonds matched his career-high with 35 points to lead the Polar Bear men’s basketball team to a 99-70 win over Bates on Friday night at Morrell Gymnasium.

The Polar Bears completed a season sweep of the Bobcats with the win in their conference opener. Bowdoin also defeated Bates (2-10, 0-1) in Lewiston on Dec. 6, 80-59.

Simonds was outstanding in the first half, scoring 27 points and putting the game out of reach by intermission. Both teams shot well in the early going, but Simonds scored 11 of Bowdoin’s first 13 points and spearheaded a 10-0 run that pushed the Polar Bear lead to double digits, 23-10, midway through the opening period.

Bowdoin connected on 62.5-percent from the field in the first 20 minutes and extended its lead to 24 points, 58-34, at the break.

The Polar Bears shot even better in the second half — 66.7-percent — as they continued to pull away from the Bobcats, pushing the lead to as many as 37 points en route to the win.

Simonds added seven rebounds. His 35 points equaled his career best set against St. Joseph’s in 2016. Hugh O’Neil added 14 points and seven boards, while David Reynolds also netted 14 points and six caroms.

Bates was led by 17 points off the bench from James Mortimer.

Bowdoin rallied, but came out short in falling to Tufts, 87-79, in NESCAC action on Saturday inside Morrell Gymnasium.

The Jumbos improved to 6-8 (1-1 NESCAC) with their first league win of the season, while the Polar Bears fell to 8-4 (1-1 NESCAC)

Luke Rogers had 18 points and 16 rebounds, while Justin Kouyoumdjian (15) and Will Brady (14) also reached double-figures for Tufts.

Bowdoin was paced by a game-high 23 points from Reynolds, who netted a trio of 3-pointers. Simonds had 20 points and eight boards for the Polar Bears, while Sam Grad had 14 points and five rebounds off the bench for Bowdoin.

Bowdoin returns to action Tuesday night at Maine Maritime Academy (6 p.m.).

Women’s basketball

The top-ranked Polar Bears dominated the second half en route to an impressive 82-63 win at fourth-ranked Tufts on Saturday afternoon.

Bowdoin remained unbeaten at 12-0 and improved to 2-0 in NESCAC play. The Jumbos lost for the first time this season and fell to 12-1 (1-1 NESCAC).

The teams traded blows in the first half as the squads exchanged the lead seven times in the opening 20 minutes. Tufts led 15-14 after the first quarter, but Bowdoin opened the second frame on an 8-2 run, sparked by an Abby Kelly 3-pointer, to take a 22-17 lead.

Bowdoin maintained the lead for the remainder of the first half, but Tufts closed the second quarter on a 9-4 surge, closing the gap to 32-30 at the break following a Katie Martensen jumper.

The hosts stormed out of the gate in the third quarter, using an 8-0 run to take their biggest lead of the contest, 38-32, with 8:42 to go in the period.

Bowdoin answered quickly with a 10-2 surge, regaining the lead on a pair of Maddie Hasson free throws with 5:27 on the clock.

Molly Ryan briefly regained the lead for Tufts on a 3-pointer, 43-42, with 5:13 on the clock, but Kelly answered again for Bowdoin, knocking down a trey to give the Polar Bears the lead for good.

Bowdoin closed the third quarter on an 11-3 run, and a 3-pointer from Sela Kay gave the visitors a 56-48 lead heading into the final period.

The Polar Bears poured in on from there, scoring 26 points in the fourth quarter, connecting on 50-percent of their shots in the period and extending the lead to as many as 23 points on their way to the win.

Hasson continued her hot play, finishing with a game-high 21 points, seven rebounds and three steals. Hasson hit on 9-of-11 from the field in the game. Bowdoin also got 17 points from Kelly, including a trio of 3-pointers, while Samantha Roy finished with a season-best 15 points, seven rebounds, five assists and two steals.

Erica DeCandido led Tufts with 20 points, half of which came on a 10-of-10 performance from the free-throw line.

Hassan poured in 25 points to power the Polar Bears to a 65-49 NESCAC win over Bates on Friday in Lewiston.

Bowdoin swept the season series with the Bobcats, who fell to 4-5, 0-1 NESCAC.

After losing to the Polar Bears by 55 points in Brunswick just three weeks ago, the Bobcats were able to hang with Bowdoin for most of the contest. Bowdoin owned just a 14-12 lead after one quarter, but opened the second period on a 9-3 run to create some distance. A pair of buckets by Moira Train pushed the Bowdoin lead into double figures, 29-16, where it stayed for the remainder of the contest.

Hassan was 10-of-14 from the field and pulled down 10 rebounds for a double-double. Kelly chipped in 15 points, nine rebounds and three assists, with Taylor Choate chipping in 11 points. Roy dished out a game-high nine assists.

Ariana Dalia led Bates with 15 points.

The Polar Bears will return to action on Tuesday night as they travel to play at Husson (7 p.m.).

Men’s hockey

Bowdoin cruised to a 4-1 victory over host Hamilton on Saturday afternoon at Clinton, N.Y.

The Polar Bears climbed to 5-5-1 (3-3-1 NESCAC). The Continentals are 5-6-1 (3-3-1 NESCAC).

Albert Washco netted his first of two goals in the game to give Bowdoin a 1-0 lead at 17:11 in the first period. On the power play, Bradley Ingersoll passed to Graham Rutledge at the top of the left circle. Rutledge split a pair of defenders with a pass to Washco in the slot for a one-timer to the upper-left corner.

Rutledge doubled the Bowdoin lead with eight minutes remaining in the second frame. Ingersoll won a faceoff in the Hamilton zone and took a shot on net. Rutledge tucked away the rebound to extend the Polar Bears lead.

Ronnie Lestan added a goal with 43 seconds remaining in the frame. Washco recorded his second goal of the game midway through the third period.

The Continentals spoiled the shutout bid with a tally in the final five minutes.

Alex Zafonte made 40 saves for Bowdoin, while Anthony Tirabassi made 25 stops for Hamilton. Bowdoin went 2-for-4 on the power play, while the hosts were 0-for-5.

Rutledge had a goal and two assists and Ingersoll added a pair of helpers.

On Friday, Bowdoin returned to action with a 6-3 NESCAC loss at Amherst.

Chris Wallace, Cody Todesco and Christian Capello scored for the Polar Bears.

In net, Kyle St. Denis made 45 saves in the setback, while Mammoths netminder Michael Cullen had 22 stops.

Bowdoin hosts Wesleyan on Friday at 7 p.m.

Women’s hockey

Williams earned the weekend series sweep with a 3-0 win at Bowdoin on Saturday afternoon inside Sidney J. Watson Arena.

The Polar Bears are 0-10-1 (0-4 NESCAC) and the Ephs leave Maine at 8-2-1 (4-2 NESCAC).

The Ephs jumped out early with a goal 3:17 into play. Avery Dunn pulled the puck off the right boards just inside Bowdoin’s zone and skated in for a shot on Kerri St. Denis. Amanda Reisman cleaned up the rebound, putting a shot past the left skate of St. Denis.

Reisman set up the Ephs second goal by carrying the puck from the right boards towards net. With a scramble in front of the net, Michaela O’Connor pushed the puck across the goal line as the net came off its anchors.

Bowdoin successfully killed a two minute 5-on-3 power play for Williams five minutes into the second period.

Brynn Puppe set up a power-play goal in the second, extending the lead to 3-0 with a pass to Meghan Halloran from the left point to right post. Halloran centered the puck for a quick deflection by Abby Brustad.

St. Denis made 37 stops for the Polar Bears. Chloe Heiting made 36 saves for the Ephs.

Williams began the two-game NESCAC series with a 3-1 victory over Bowdoin on Friday.

Trailing 2-0 in the third period, Angelina Joyce scored off assists from Marissa Fichter and Tala Glass.

Bowdoin netminder St. Denis turned away 32 shots, while Chloe Heiting had 25 saves.

Bowdoin plays its final non-conference game of the season on Wednesday at home against Castleton with a 4 p.m. start.
