BRUNSWICK — The Bowdoin College women’s basketball team never trailed in a 76-63 win over Trinity College on Friday evening in Morrell Gymnasium.

The top-ranked Polar Bears improved to 3-0 in the New England Small College Athletic Conference, while the Bantams fell to 11-3 (1-2 NESCAC).

Bowdoin scored the first seven points of the game and quickly built a double-digit lead thanks to seven early points from Maddie Hasson. The Polar Bears connected on 50-percent of their shots in the opening period and led 23-9 after the first 10 minutes.

The Bantams stayed within striking distance in the second quarter, as Allie Morin hit a pair of 3-pointers. Bowdoin owned a 37-23 lead at the break.

The Polar Bears put the game away in the third quarter, hitting on 11-of-18 from the field to push their advantage to 23 points, 61-38, entering the fourth quarter.

Bowdoin pushed the lead to as many as 29 points in the final period before the Bantams made a late surge to close the final margin to 13.

Hasson continued her hot play, scoring 23 points on 10-of-13 shooting from the field while grabbing four rebounds, two steals and blocking one shot. Abby Kelly had 13 points, while Taylor Choate added 11. Samantha Roy scored 10 points with nine assists for the Polar Bears.

Trinity’s lone player in double digits was Erin Cunningham with 14.

Bowdoin hit 13 3-pointers in a 90-55 route of the University of Southern Maine on Saturday.

Freshman Sela Kay went 6-of-6 from beyond the arc and finished with 18 points. Hannah Graham had 15 points, while Roy finished with 14 points, seven rebounds and seven assists for the Polar Bears. Choate also added 13 points, seven boards and four steals.

USM was led by 11 points each from Jackie Luckhardt and Victoria Harris.

Bowdoin will play a non-conference game at Maine-Presque Isle today at 3 p.m.

Men’s basketball

On Friday, a Bowdoin rally fell short in a 66-56 NESCAC loss to Trinity at Hartford, Connecticut.

Down 62-46, the Polar Bears used a 10-0 run to climb back into the contest.

However, the Bantams held Bowdoin scoreless the rest of the way.

Trinity’s Kyle Padmore led all players with 20 points, while Donald Jorden had 13 points and 10 rebounds for the Bantams.

Zavier Rucker was Bowdoin’s lone player in double digits with 14. Hugh O’Neil had 10 rebounds.

Bowdoin returns to Maine to face Saint Joseph’s College in Standish on Tuesday night at 8 p.m.

Men’s hockey

Bowdoin dropped a 5-1 Saturday conference matchup to Trinity at Sidney J. Watson Arena.

The Polar Bears are 5-7-1 (3-5-1 NESCAC). The Bantams left Maine at 9-3-2 (5-2-1 NESCAC).

Bowdoin took a lead 3:15 into the game. A Trinity defender controlled the puck in the Bantam’s own zone, but Cody Todesco saw an opening and poked the puck off his stick and past Tedy Loughborough.

Playing shorthanded seven minutes into the frame, Albert Washco broke out of the Polar Bears zone and skated uncontested down the ice towards Loughborough. Washco tried to pull towards the right post, but was met by a goalie pad.

The Bantams stepped up pressure in the final five minutes and peppered Alex Zafonte. A scramble of players from both teams crowded the crease and James Callahan bounced a shot off the crossbar. Zafonte regained position and poked the rebound away.

Trinity evened the game with a power-play goal 4:08 into the second. Liam Feeney passed the puck from the right point to Taggart Corriveau low on the near side. Corriveau found Lucas Michaud with a cross, allowing Michaud to go top shelf.

Timothy Weinstein put another Trinity shot off the crossbar in the second. The Bantams took a 2-1 lead with 1:50 remaining in the frame. Eric Benshadle carried down the right boards and centered a pass to Nicholas Polsinelli for an open look at net. Polsinelli put an elevated shot past Zafonte.

Midway through the final frame, Michael Grande ripped a slapshot from the right point to extend Trinity’s lead to 3-1.

The Polar Bears nearly survived a 5-on-3 penalty kill, but Michael Grande collected a loose puck along the left boards and circled to the high slot. Grande wristed a shot off the left pipe that ricocheted in.

Grande added an empty netter in the final four minutes.

Zafonte ended the day with a career-high 48 saves. Loughborough made 30 stops for Trinity.

Wesleyan kept the Polar Bears off the board in a 5-0 NESCAC win on Friday at Watson Arena.

The Cardinals improved to 7-3-1 overall, 6-0-1 in the conference.

Tim Sestak picked up his third shutout of the campaign as he turned away 27 shots. Vincent Lima had two goals in the win.

Zafonte had 33 saves for the Polar Bears.

Bowdoin hosts USM on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Women’s hockey

Amherst scored three third-period goals to defeat Bowdoin, 3-1, on Sunday afternoon.

Amherst improved to 6-5-2 with a 3-3-2 mark in conference play. The Polar Bears dropped to 1-12-1 (0-6 NESCAC).

Izzi Stoddard gave the Polar Bears a lead 1:40 into the game. Angelina Joyce put the puck off the back boards and found Stoddard’s stick for a quick shot into an open net.

Miranda Bell nearly doubled the score in the final four minutes. A Bowdoin 2-on-1 resulted in Bell alone in the slot. The senior’s wrister from point-blank was met by the glove of Caitlin Walker.

The Mammoths broke through 6:36 into the final frame. Anne Malloy left a pass for Katie Savage behind the net, allowing Savage a wraparound look to put away 5-hole.

Amherst took the lead on a power play three minutes later as Jocelyn Hunyadi put a deflected puck inside the left post. Hunyadi recorded an empty-netter in the final two minutes.

Walker made 31 stops for the Mammoths. Kerri St. Denis made 42 saves for the Polar Bears.

The Mammoths captured a 3-2 win on Saturday.

Marissa Fichter and Angelina Joyce scored for the Polar Bears, while St. Denis had 29 saves.

Bowdoin hosts Middlebury in a NESCAC series beginning this upcoming Friday at 7 p.m.

Bowdoin opened its season with the Bowdoin Invitational on Saturday at Farley Field House.

The Bowdoin women totaled 176 points to easily out-pace second-place WPI (146) in a nine-team field, while the Polar Bear men placed second with 148 points, trailing only WPI (216) in the men’s nine-team meet.

First year Serena Jonas won the Pentathlon, scoring 3,001 points and meeting the qualifying standard for the New England Division III championship along with Stephanie Mueller (2,731).

First year Lydia Pitts won the women’s triple jump (36-09), while Sara Ory claimed the 600-meter run (1:41.53). Bowdoin also got wins in the 800 from Eliza Jevon (2:27.45), Claire Traum in the 1,000 (3:03.74), Caroline Shipley in the 3,000 (10:25.67) and Anne McKee in the 5,000 (19:23.21). Belinda Saint Louis claimed the shot put with a toss of 37-06.

Men’s highlights including Reid Brawer winning the long jump (21-08) and the triple jump (43-02.50) for the Polar Bears. First-year Mason Freeman took the high jump (6-02.75) and Michael Donovan placed first in the shot put (45-01.75).

Stevie Upton won the 400 for Bowdoin in 52.9 seconds, while Dylan Welch won the 1,000 in 2:35.40.

Bowdoin will return to action on Saturday with the Bowdoin Invitational II.
