There have been daily advertisements run in the Portland Press Herald, Falmouth Forecaster and The Time Record suggesting that commercial fisherman’s livelihood will be “significantly at risk” due to the proposed Mere Point Oyster Company lease. These advertisements have been run by the group called Preserve Maquoit Bay. So, who really is this group?

According to the Maine Secretary of State, this company’s character of business is “ownership and management of real estate.” The “member, manager and authorized persons” of Maquoit Bay, LLC is Kathie Dioli and Paul Dioli. These individuals are waterfront landowners on Maquoit Bay who have been opposed to the oyster company lease.

Advertisements run in the above newspapers have costs tens of thousands of dollars. Is this really about protecting the lobstermen? Or is this just a NIMBY hiding behind a company?

The lease is for a total of 28 acres (the 40-acre proposal has 12 acres of open channels for fishing and lobstering) that is less than 1 percent of the 3,000 acres of Maquoit Bay. Is this the real estate they are so deeply concerned about? Or are these waterfront landowners, hiding behind a make-believe company, more concerned about their own waterfront real estate?
