BRUNSWICK — The Bowdoin College women’s basketball team had four players in double figures in a 85-51 win over Hamilton on Friday night at Morrell Gymnasium.

Bowdoin never trailed, but the teams traded early baskets until an 11-0 Polar Bear run, capped by a layup from Samantha Roy, gave the hosts an 18-6 edge.

The Polar Bears maintained an eight-point lead heading into the second quarter thanks to a six-point flurry by Cordelia Stewart, 24-16.

Bowdoin took complete command in the second stanza, outscoring Hamilton 23-8 to take a 47-24 edge at the break.

The Polar Bears shot 52-percent from the field in the period, outrebounded Hamilton 13-5 and got six points from Taylor Choate to put the game out of reach without taking a free throw in the quarter.

Bowdoin extended its lead to as many as 37 points in the second half on their way to the win.

Roy had a game-high 15 points to go with three assists, while Maddie Hasson added 12 points and seven rebounds. Choate had 10 points, four steals, five assists and four rebounds for Bowdoin, which also got 12 points and five rebounds off the bench from Annie Boasberg.

Hamilton was led by 11 points from Kelcie Zarle.

Men’s basketball

Bowdoin suffered its second NESCAC setback in as many days as the Polar Bears fell to Amherst, 86-62 on Saturday afternoon.

The Mammoths improved to 15-3 (3-2 NESCAC), while the Polar Bears fell to 11-7 (2-4 NESCAC).

The Polar Bears stayed within striking distance in the first half, trailing 26-20 midway through the frame. Amherst took control with a 13-4 surge, pushing its lead to double digits late in the period. The hosts carried a 46-32 lead into halftime thanks to 10 points from Joseph Schneider.

Bowdoin failed to climb back into the contest, and hit only 1-of-8 from 3-point range in the second half.

Amherst finished at 53-percent shooting while holding Bowdoin to just 38-percent for the game.

David Reynolds led Bowdoin with 18 points while Zavier Rucker added 15 and three steals. Jack Simonds had 10 points for the Polar Bears.

Bowdoin fell at Hamilton on Friday by a 77-42 score.

The Continentals used a 13-2 first-half run to take control and led 39-25 at the half.

Simonds had 11 points for the Polar Bears.

The Polar Bears will head to Maine Maritime Academy tonight at 7 p.m.

Swimming

The Polar Bears opened a weekend of back-to-back dual meets with a commanding win against Trinity on Saturday afternoon.

The women defeated the Bantams by a 221-79 margin, with the men earning a 222-76 victory.

Marshall Lowery, Sterling Dixon, Mary Laurita and Amanda Banasiak opened with a quick in-season time of 3:59.26 in the 400-yard medley relay.

The B team of Cecilia de Havenon, Caitlin Loi, Ally Fromson-Ho, and Kate Fosburgh finished second in 4:10.06.

The Bowdoin women finished first through sixth in the 200 freestyle, led by Nadia Eguchi in 1:57.77. First-year Erin Moody was also under two minutes with a time of 1:59.12. Kathleen Kemp followed for third in 2:00.16.

Laurita continued the wins for the Polar Bears, touching in 28.27 to lead the team to a 1-4 finish in the 50 backstroke. Lowery snagged the top spot in the 50 breaststroke in 32.04. Laurita and Lowery went 1-2 in the 500 freestyle in times of 5:15.26 and 5:20.84. They were followed by first year Kate Moynihan for third in 5:22.16. First-year Fosburgh won the 100 free with a time of 54.18. She was also runner-up in the 400 IM in 4:43.31. Classmate Jess Gearan touched in 1:02.12 to win the 100 backstroke.

Ellie Wargo led a sweep of the 100 butterfly with her time of 1:00.04. Fromson-Ho was just behind in 1:00.28. Dixon picked up another first place for the team with a 1:10.01 in the 100 breaststroke. Wargo out touched Dixon 27.72 to 27.79 to win the 50 butterfly. Fromson-Ho raced to a 1:03.37 to win the 100 IM.

Carly Dickson, Lowery, Eguchi and Dehavenon posted a 1:42.09 to win the 200 freestyle relay.  Wren Sablich won 1-meter diving with 250.04 points. Becca Stern was just behind her with a score of 247.42. On 3-meter Sten scored 259.29 points, less than a point more than Sablich with a score of 258.82.

Justin Yang, Michael Tirone, Jacob Baltaytis and Karl Sarier raced to a time of 3:28.54 to win the men’s 400 medley relay. They were not far ahead of the B team of Ted Mebust, Stephen Pastoriza, Julian Abaldo, and Coleman Komishane in 3:31.06.

In an impressive double Pastoriza hopped back in to win the 400 IM in 4:19.31. Komishane led a sweep of the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:46.41. Killian Dickson (1:49.15) and Daniel Williams (1:49.79) followed. Williams won the 500 freestyle in 4:52.87. First-year duo Yang and Mebust posted a 1-2 finish in the 50 backstroke in times of 24.63 and 24.64, respectively. Mebust had the upper hand in the 100 backstroke with a 53.16 to Yang’s 53.58.

Seniors Sarier and Pastoriza were first and second in the 50 breaststroke with times of 27.57 and 27.64. Sarier was also first to the wall in the 100 freestyle, stopping the clock in 47.11. Pastoriza added a victory in the 100 IM with a time of 56.98. Andrew Macdonald (53.83) and Yang (54.12) were the top two finishers in the 100 fly.

Cameron Chertavian secured another Polar Bear victory with a 1:05.87 100 breaststroke. Teammate Alex Burns was runner-up in 1:06.60. Sarier, Michael O’Neal, Abaldo and Mebust swam a 1:26.40 to win the 200 freestyle relay. Mitchell Ryan scored 293.62 points to win 1-meter diving while Henry Isaacson was second with a score of 273.75. Ryan (325.58) and Isaacson (261.68) were also first and second on 3-meter.

Women’s hockey

Bowdoin split a weekend doubleheader with Wesleyan.

In Friday’s opener, the Polar Bears (3-14-1, 2-8 NESCAC) earned a 3-1 victory.

Bowdoin jumped out to a 1-0 lead 6:08 into the first period. JJ Taube sent a pass from the Bowdoin zone up the right boards for Julia Surgenor, who wristed the puck just below the crossbar on the breakaway.

Wesleyan looked for an equalizer on the power play midway through the frame, but Caroline Seibold’s point-blank shot was turned away by Kerri St. Denis.

The Polar Bears doubled their lead with 4:21 remaining in the period. Miranda Bell redirected a shot from Ali Dougal to put the puck past Allegra Grant.

Just two minutes later, Wesleyan cut its deficit in half as Maggie Curran fired a shot from the right faceoff circle.

The game’s last goal came off a short-handed tally by Angelina Joyce 1:44 into the second period. Joyce faked right and pulled left to bury the puck in the bottom corner.

St. Denis ended the day with 19 saves in net to earn the win.

Wesleyan evened the set with a 4-0 victory on Saturday.

The Polar Bears travel to Hamilton for their next NESCAC series beginning on Friday at 7 p.m.

Indoor track

Bowdoin rolled to a pair of wins in the Bowdoin Invitational III meet Saturday at Farley Field House.

Both teams came away with wins against a field of in-state opponents. The Polar Bear men totaled 90.5 points to defeat Thomas (64.5), Maine-Farmington (15) and Maine-Fort Kent (7). The women’s team carded 98 points to out-pace Thomas (23), Maine-Farmington (10) and Maine-Fort Kent (9).

In the running events, Bowdoin got wins from Owen Tuck (200-meter run), Mateo Rivera (400), Dylan Welch (600) and Jack Richardson (800). Alec Ferguson-Hull won the 1,000 while Thomas Namara added the 3,000 win for Bowdoin.

The Polar Bears also claimed the 4 x 400 relay thanks to Stevie Upton, Simelus Lyndbergh, Rivera and Soren Birkeland.

In the field events, the Polar Bears got first-place showings from Ryan Durkin (pole vault), Mason Freeman (long jump) and Reid Brawer (triple jump).

The Polar Bears dominated the running events in the women’s meet, receiving wins from Samantha Schaefer (60), Selena Jonas (200), Leah Matari (400) and Abigael Osmanski (800). Stefanie Mueller claimed the 60 hurdles.

Bowdoin got distance wins from Eliza Jevon (mile), Brigid Greed (3,000), and Mandy Graham (5,000). The Polar Bears also won the 4 x 200 relay.

In the field events, Sophia Slovenski (pole vault), Morgen Gallagher (long jump), Carolyn Brady (triple jump), and Belinda Saint Louis (weight throw) won their respective events.

The Polar Bears return to action with their respective Indoor State Championship meets next weekend. The women will host their Maine State Meet at Farley Field House at 6 p.m. on Friday.

The men’s Maine State Meet will be hosted by the University of Southern Maine on Saturday evening at 6 p.m.
