BRUNSWICK — Cal Fullerton scored the game-winning goal to give the Bowdoin men’s lacrosse team an 8-7 win over Connecticut College in its season-opener on Saturday afternoon at Whittier Field.

The Polar Bears (1-0) led for the most of regulation only to see the Camels (0-1) score twice in a one minute span in the fourth quarter to force overtime.

Bowdoin took the lead on a Jake Crossman goal 1:43 into the game and held a 3-1 lead after the opening quarter.

Conn. College got goals from Brandon Plante and PJ Kelleher to tie the game early in the second quarter, before Reed Baker and Sam Langan regained the lead for Bowdoin.

The Polar Bears held a 5-4 lead at intermission, and the teams traded goals in the third quarter as Bowdoin carried a 6-5 advantage heading to the fourth.

Zach Chandler extended Bowdoin’s lead to two goals early in the final frame, but Plante and Jordan Foster scored at 6:13 and 5:15, respectively, to tie the score at 7-7.

Both teams had a possession in overtime, and Jon Creed had a doorstep opportunity to give the Camels the victory. Bowdoin goaltender Jack O’Connor made a clutch save and the Polar Bear scooped up the groundball.

Fullerton took it coast-to-coast and ripped a low shot to win it with 39.6 left in the first overtime.

Crossman and Chandler scored twice apiece for Bowdoin in the victory. Brad Ingersoll had two assists. Henry Savage had a team-high three caused turnovers. Foster had two goals and two assists for Connecticut College. Plante had two scores.

Colin Smith stopped 15 shots for the Camels. O’Connor had six saves for Bowdoin. The Polar Bears owned a 48-19 edge in shots in the game.

The Polar Bears will return to action on Tuesday night at the University of New England at 7 p.m.

Women’s lacrosse

Bowdoin won its season-opener at Connecticut College, 12-7, on Sunday afternoon.

The 13th-ranked Polar Bears moved to 1-0 on the season, while the Camels dropped to 0-1.

The Camels led 2-1 after the first 5:24 thanks to a pair of early goals from Jamie Navoni and Clara Bisson.

Bowdoin dominated the remainder of the half, outscoring the hosts 5-1 over the final 24:17, including two goals apiece from Katie Miller and first-year Fiona Bundy.

Bundy added to her tally with the opening goal of the second half, extending Bowdoin’s lead to 7-3.

The Camels used a 3-0 surge to cut into the Bowdoin lead, closing the gap to 7-6 on a Julia Loesch goal with 19:41 to go.

The Polar Bears put the game away with a 5-0 run, sparked by a pair of player-down goals by Miller and Elizabeth Growney. Kate Kelly, Miller and Eliza Denious closed out the spurt for Bowdoin, which pushed its lead to 12-6 with under five minutes to play.

Miller led all players with a four-goal effort for Bowdoin, while Bundy scored three goals in her first collegiate contest. Denious added two goals and an assist along with three ground balls and two caused turnovers.

Erin Morrissey made eight saves for Bowdoin in goal. Nina Fazio stopped 12 shots for the Camels.

Bowdoin returns to action at home this upcoming Saturday against Amherst at noon.

Indoor track

Two Bowdoin College women’s relay teams have qualified for the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championship in selections.

The Polar Bears will compete at the championship in Boston, hosted at the Reggie Lewis Center.

Bowdoin’s distance medley relay team of Delaney Bullock, Sara Ory, Claire Traum and Caroline Shipley grabbed a trip to NCAA’s thanks to a season-best time of 11:46.73 in the event, which is ninth in the nation heading into nationals. The Polar Bears won this event at the 2018 NCAA Championship.

The 4 x 400 meter relay squad of Emma Beane, Morgen Gallagher, Samantha Schaefer and Ory also qualified thanks to their time of 3:51.76, qualifying as the final team into the field.

The events will run back-to-back on Friday evening with the prelims of the 4 x 400 scheduled for 8:05 p.m. and the distance relay slated for 8:45. If they qualify for the finals, the 4 x 400 is the final event at the championship on Saturday evening at 5:10 p.m.

Swimming

Nine members of the Bowdoin swimming and diving team have earned trips to the NCAA Division III Championship to be held on March 20-23 in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Seniors Sterling Dixon, Mitch Ryan and Karl Sarier will all make their fourth consecutive NCAA appearances. Junior Marshall Lowery continues her perfect streak with her third NCAA invitation, and sophomore Mary Laurita will head to the meet for the second time.

Juniors Amanda Banasiak, Julian Abaldo and Drew MacDonald along with first-year Ted Mebust will be making their first trips to nationals.
