USM lax setback

PLYMOUTH, N.H. — In a battle of the top offensive team against the top defensive side, the second-seeded University of Southern Maine women’s lacrosse team failed to overcome a 5-0 halftime deficit and fell to top-seeded Plymouth State University, 12-7, in the championship game of the 2019 Little East Conference Championship Tournament Sunday afternoon at Arold Field.

Southern Maine, playing in the title game for the first time since 2013, and fourth time overall, finished the season 10-6. 

Plymouth State won its third straight title, and eighth since 2002, and will carry an 11-5 mark into the first round of the NCAA tournament.

Former Freeport High School standout Taylor Rinaldi scored two goals to lead USM.

earns first victory

TOPSHAM —  The Mt. Ararat High School jayvee baseball team evened its record at 1-1 with a 13-9 victory over Medomak Valley recently. 

Carson Taylor led the 12-hit attack with three singles. Jay Kearney and Cris Brady singled twice, with Ty Henke, Tucker Swanson, Braedon Johnson, Gage Armstrong and Kyler Brannan chipping in with a single each. 

Austin Berry, Henke  and Taylor combined to give up seven hits, while walking 13 and striking out eight. 

BIW downs Wilson’s
in Bath Minors

BATH — Hunter Nadeau struck out four, Landon Whitney had three punch-outs and Bath Iron Works earned a 13-8 victory over Wilson’s in Bath Minor League baseball action on Sunday.

Eli Sommers and Whitney picked up two hits in the win, while Nadeau and Elliot Becker chipped in a hit.

Silas Krajewski, Scott Elwell, Matty Seaman, Justice Bean and Adam Ackley each pitched for Wilson’s, with Ackley picking up the lone hit. 

Mt. Ararat JV 
lax plays a pair

PORTLAND — Gene Emerimana, Tristan Parker, Kaden Getchell and Aniston Rinneer had a goal each as the Mt. Ararat High School jayvee boys’ lacrosse team played Portland to a 4-4 deadlock on Friday at Fitzpatrick Stadium. 

Tristan Burch added an assist, with Tyler Newkirk turning away nine shots in the Eagles cage. 

Bryce Lafrance, Robby Hyde, Brewster Chard and Isaac Morgan played well. 

Mt. Ararat (1-2-1) fell to Marshwood, 4-0, recently.

Newkirk had 10 stops, while Chance Versey, Lafrance and Trey Saucier played well. 

Mt. Ararat boosters
to host golf tourney

TOPSHAM — The Mt. Ararat High School sports boosters are set to hold the 2019 Mt. Ararat Golf Tournament on June 2 at Highland Green Golf Club.

The cost is $200 per foursome and includes nine holes of golf, a golf cart, bagged lunch and prizes. 

The boosters have sponsorship opportunities.
