SCARBOROUGH — The John Andrews Memorial Eastern Trail 5K is set to take place Saturday, May 18, with benefits going toward Blazing the Trail South, an 11-mile segment that will extend the current off-road trail from Kennebunk to South Berwick.

The 5K route will be on the Scarborough Marsh off-road section of the Eastern Trail. According to Eastern Trail event coordinator Jen Steele-Skillings, participants will meet 30 minutes prior to the 9 a.m. start time at O’Reilly’s Cure Restaurant & Bar, 264 U.S. Route 1.

Participants can register online ahead of time, or register at the meeting location on the day of the event. Registration fees are $20 prior to the race, and $25 for same-day purchase. For those over 21, one beer is included with the registration fee.

Additional donations will help support the Close the Gap initiative, which aims to connect a 1.6-mile segment of the trail between South Portland and Scarborough.

The event was created in memory of the late John Andrews, who spearheaded the Eastern Trail initiative in the early 1990s.
