SEBAGO — A political newcomer has officially ousted an incumbent by a single vote for a three-year seat on the Sebago Selectboard.

The election, which took place on May 28, was initially too close to call and prompted a recount on Friday, May 31.

After the recount, the unofficial results still stood, with Scott Douglas, who received 87 votes, defeating incumbent Phil Lowe, who received 86 votes.

The second three-year Selectboard seat went to incumbent Chris Parker, who won with a decisive 97 votes.

Sebago Town Clerk Maureen Scanlon said that after a routine machine count that took place on May 28, Lowe and Douglas were tied at 86 votes each.

She then hand counted the ballots three times and counted 87 votes for Douglas and 86 votes for Lowe.

After the recount on Friday, the results were made official.

Neither Douglas nor Lowe could be reached for comment.

In a past interview, Lowe said his mindset is one of service for the community: “I can always set my thoughts aside and listen to those who want me to serve them. I want to work for them, at the end of the day, and hopefully my experience facilitates that.”

He was on the Selectboard for three years.

While Douglas has not been a member of any other town committees, he said, “I’ve been around the town my whole life, and I know a lot of stuff about the town. I know where Sebago people want Sebago to be.”
