CASCO — The site of Hancock Memorial Field will soon receive an upgrade, with new lights for the baseball field, a new multipurpose field with lights, a walking trail and an expanded parking lot.

The Planning Board approved the project at its July meeting.

Parks and Recreation Director Beth Latsey said that work on the site has been ongoing since 2014 when the Casco Memorial School, which used to be on the site, was demolished.

“The Selectboard charged the recreation committee with coming up with a plan for the property,” she said.

The site has a pavilion, a playground and a baseball field. The new multipurpose field will be created in the grassy area behind the baseball field.

The committee raised nearly $250,000 through grants and donations for the project, and voters recently approved an additional $690,000 at town meeting this year.

“It’s going to be a beautiful complex,” Latsey said. “The walking trail will start behind the backstop, meander through the woods, follow the soccer field, come back through by the concession stand. It’s going to be beautiful.”

Latsey hopes to break ground on the project in the fall but said the town has not yet determined who will be doing the work.
