More than 3,300 Central Maine Power customers in Kennebec County lost electricity Saturday afternoon after a raccoon apparently entered the Monmouth substation site and caused equipment damage, a CMP spokeswoman said.

Catharine Hartnett said that by 2:20 p.m., all customers in the Augusta area had power restored after a mobile substation was installed at the Monmouth site.

The company reported on Twitter earlier in the day that the outages happened because of “animal damage” at the Monmouth substation.
