PORTLAND — Nomination papers to run for one of nine seats on the city’s charter commission are now available and must be returned by March 29.

The commission will include one representative from each of the city’s five districts and four at-large representatives, all of whom will be elected June 8,  and Peter Eglinton, Michael Kebede and Dory Waxman, who the council appointed in August.

Voters last summer approved forming the commission to review and recommend changes in the charter. A request that the city provide public campaign funding for local elections spurred the call for a charter commission, but advocates told the Forecaster last summer they also want the commission to review the powers of the city manager and to address institutional racism.

The commission will be required to present a final report of its recommendations within 12 months. Any changes would go to voters at a regular or special election.

Papers are available at the City Clerk’s office, room 24 on City Hall’s basement level. Those arriving to pick up the nomination papers should use the Myrtle Street entrance; masks are required.  For more information about nominations, contact the City Clerk’s office at 874-8677 or elections@portlandmaine.gov.
