They say that this time it’s different, that although Donald Trump was acquitted, the love affair is over. I hope that’s true.

After watching the brilliant case presented by the House managers, and seeing the results, I almost cried. That Republican senators gave a standing ovation to Capitol Police Officer Eugene Goodman, then voted for acquittal, is the height of hypocrisy. They honored the man who saved them, and failed to hold accountable the man who put them in danger in the first place.

Trump is gone. We have several years of waking up absent of the dread that most Americans have felt for the last four years. The one thing we need to remember is that it was the Republicans in the White House and in Congress who are responsible for the deaths and injuries that occurred on Jan. 6.

It was Mike Pence, who stared lovingly at Trump for four years as he praised Trump’s great leadership. It was Sens. Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio, House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy and, yes, it was Sen. Susan Collins who failed to act when it really mattered, and declared that Trump had “learned … a pretty big lesson.” We almost lost our democracy. We must never forget.
