It’s just plain hypocritical for the Republican Party of the state of Maine to indicate that, as a party, they are planning to censure Sen. Susan Collins. Really? Just a few short months ago, the party wholeheartedly supported Collins in a senatorial race against Sara Gideon.

So the Maine Republican Party of Maine is casting its lot with the conspiracy theorists and violent white supremacists? How can anyone watch the videos recording in real time the insurrection at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, and not agree, that this attack is not just scary, it represents a dangerous attack on our democracy – an attack on the integrity of elections.

I did not vote for Collins in the November election. However, by her recent vote to convict No. 45 of insurrection, she has again gained my respect. Her vote to convict was based on her commitment to uphold the Constitution and to put country above party.

Does the Maine Republican Party really want to attach its future to Donald Trump? Trump, a man who, during his presidency, spread lies and conspiracy theories in the months-long lead-up to the violence at the Capitol? The Republican Party in Maine would sacrifice integrity for lies?

I say “Shame on you,” and the people of Maine will not be fooled by the party’s hypocrisy if it chooses to censure Sen. Collins.
