Rep. Maggie O’Neil and Anna Siegel (Maine Voices, Feb. 15) are right about the risk of investing Maine’s pension funds in fossil fuels as momentum builds worldwide for transitioning from fossil fuels.

The 116th Congress saw at least seven bills imposing fees on fossil fuels to reduce their use. Four of these bills were bipartisan. One of these, HR 763, the Energy Innovation and Carbon Dividend Act, has 88 co-sponsors, including Rep. Chellie Pingree.

It places a fee on fossil fuels at their source, returns the money to all American households equally as a dividend and collects tariffs on imports from countries that do not have equivalent pricing schemes. With a new Congress and administration, we can expect such bills to move forward, joining similar moves by China and the European Union.

We need divestment and legislation to go hand in hand to hasten our transition from burning fossil fuels and to reduce the impacts of climate change.
