There was a time when we honored our elected representatives for using their heads, voting their consciences and representing all of their constituents. Now, political operatives censure them for not mindlessly following the edicts of faction, and “primary” has become a verb wielded as a threat.
It’s time for the party system to work for us instead of the other way around. A step away from the extremes and in the right direction would be for Maine to adopt an open primary system. Please tell your legislators.
