GORHAM — A request to construct a self-storage facility at 551 Main St. (Route 25) likely will receive final approval from the Planning Board Monday after a site plan review that began in September.
Walt Stinson, who founded the engineering firm Sebago Technics, plans to build On Point Self Storage on a hilltop above the intersection of Routes 25 and 237.
Stinson has permits in hand from Maine Department of Environmental Protection and Army Corps of Engineers and hopes to start construction next month with a target of opening the business this summer.
The facility will be built on the site of an historic post-and-beam barn that Stinson donated to Shaw Brothers Family Foundation. The barn is being dismantled this week and will be rebuilt next year at Shaw Cherry Hill Farm in Gorham. A farmhouse at the site will be demolished within the next few weeks.
The main On Point building housing the office will run parallel to Main Street and its exterior will be in keeping with a farm theme.
“The building was designed to speak to the community’s rich agricultural history and includes cupolas on the roof,” Stinson said.
The main building, beige with green trim and doors, will be situated on 11.5 acres along with eight storage buildings encompassing 53,000 square feet of storage. Two of the storage buildings with about 15,000 square feet will be climate controlled.
Stinson said the facility will be secure with full fencing, a well-lit area around the buildings and cameras monitoring activity in critical areas around the clock.
