Maurice Loring Beal

NORTH YARMOUTH – Maurice Loring Beal, 90, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on April 7, 2021 at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House.

Maurice was born on Dec. 22, 1930. He grew up in Newfield, living above his family’s store, Beal’s General Store. He graduated Limerick High School in 1950, lettering in baseball all four years of high school. Maurice entered the Marine Corps. In 1952. He was a sergeant and fought in the Korean War.

Maurice began working for Milliken Tomlinson warehouse, a distributor for I.G.A. as a warehouse supervisor and it was while working in Portland that he met the love of his life, Donna Nelson. They were to be wed in 1961 and were married for 57 years. The couple soon moved to Falmouth residing next to Norton Farms.

Maurice began his love of harness horse racing as he followed the racing careers of neighbor Loring Norton and the Graffam boys.

His daughter Betsy was born in 1965. While raising his daughter, Maurice continued his love for life doing his favorite things watching the New York Yankees, collecting sports memorabilia and wagering on his neighbors while watching them race at local tracks.

Maurice retired in 1991 upon the arrival of his grandson, Brandon Hethcoat. Soon to follow were granddaughters, Allison and Katelyn Richards. Grampa Maurice soon began to be his grandson’s number one football fan as he followed him on a 12-year football career. Grampa Maurice could also be seen cheering on his granddaughters as they played basketball, soccer, lacrosse and hockey. Grandpa Maurice also supported the many Girl Scout events that his granddaughters were involved in.

Upon the passing of his beloved wife, Donna, in 2018 he moved in with his daughter, Betsy and her husband Todd Richards of North Yarmouth. While residing at his daughter’s home, Maurice discovered the world of the Internet. He then began to scrap book his high school sporting career and research his family history.

He was predeceased by wife, Donna Beal; parents, Arthur and Ruth Beal; and brothers, Lawrence and A. Peter Beal.

Maurice is survived by his daughter, Betsy and son-in-law, Todd Richards of North Yarmouth; grandson, Brandon and wife Mollie Hethcoat of Baltimore, Md., granddaughters, Allison and Katelyn Richards of North Yarmouth; and his sister, Beverly Buck of Waterboro.

A private graveside committal service will take place at a later day at Brooklawn Memorial Park in Portland. Arrangements are under the care of Lindquist Funeral Home in Yarmouth.
