Regarding Portland’s proposed social services and public health facility on upper Forest Avenue, reported in the Press Herald on April 15 (“Councilors support relocating social, public health services,” Page B1), I am concerned about Portland Stage attendees.

As decades-long subscribers to Portland Stage Co., my wife and I have often observed that our fellow audience members seem to skew older than the general population. How many of my fellow 70-plus theatergoers would be concerned about walking that block in the dark after parking? Would they shy away from attending Portland Stage because of it? I’d be surprised if some didn’t.

I by no means believe that the Portland facility’s clients are bad people, but they can at least be intimidating. Would you choose to have your mother stroll down Oxford and Portland streets? At night? How about your daughter?

The short timeline for relocating the city’s services should not prevent careful review. I would think the city would place greater value on Portland Stage as a cornerstone of the Arts District.
