Wayne MacKeil

SCARBOROUGH – In the late morning hours of April 5, 2021 our beloved father and devoted husband, Wayne MacKeil, slipped his earthly bonds to join his parents and loved ones in heaven. Glen Miller was playing when he passed at home surrounded by his family, this was made possible with the amazing support of Hospice of Southern Maine.

Our father was born in East Millinocket on Sept. 9, 1930 to Evelyn Staples and Frank MacKeil. He grew up in East Millinocket and graduated from Schenck High School in 1948. He attended Ricker Jr. College in 1948 before joining the Merchant Marines and was a seaman on board the Esso Taurers. He served in the U.S. Airforce in Libya, North Africa from 1951 to 1953. He graduated in 1955 from Wentworth Institute in Boston, in Machine and Tool Design. He had been introduced to the woman of his dreams, Harriet M. York, while growing up in Millinocket and eventually married her in October of 1957.

I do not believe he ever met anyone he did not find value in. If you asked him what his greatest accomplishment was, he would say without hesitation, marrying our mother, Harriet. Their love was that of fairy tales. Together they had three children: Jane Elizabeth, William Andrew and Jennifer Ann. He is also survived by his five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Wayne and Harriet resided in Cape Elizabeth and South Portland area for over 50 years, however, in 2015 they sold their home in South Portland and moved to HillCrest in Scarborough. He had a wonderful career as a civil engineer. He thrived in his skills to design and create. Where Wayne was most happy was beside the tiller of his beloved sailboats. Wayne loved to introduce anyone interested in the freedom and serenity of sailing aboard his cherished Casco Bay. As children we would often spend summer days sailing to abandoned forts on obscure islands, exploring and learning about our home. He was blessed to be able to age at home with his children and wife by his side.

A time of visitation will be held on Saturday May 15 at 2 p.m. at the Hobbs Funeral Home, 230 Cottage Rd., South Portland with a memorial service taking place at 3:30 p.m., and a light reception to follow.
