A fire in a downtown Portland apartment building Wednesday afternoon displaced 10 residents, but no one was injured.
The Portland Fire Department said the cause of the fire at 12 Alder St. appears to be the improper disposal of smoking materials. The American Red Cross was notified to help the tenants with housing and other needs.
Deputy Chief Kevin McGuire said the building was evacuated without any injuries.
The fire, which started in the wall of a third-floor apartment, was reported at 3 p.m. It took firefighters about an hour to bring the fire under control and clean up. Alder Street is located in the Bayside neighborhood.

We believe it’s important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It’s a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
