As the state of Maine prepares to close Long Creek Youth Development Center as a facility for our troubled Maine youths, I hope they will consider the following suggestion: Remove the chain-link fence and create a campus-like space for the shelter of our homeless veterans.

The facility could be the ideal place for medical and emotional support, education and retraining, and provide many other resources needed by those who have served our country. Long Creek already has the ability to house and provide the necessary services and would need less renovation than other locations.

Let’s make Long Creek a place for new chances rather than a place for detention.
