A Connecticut man has been charged with murder in connection with the death of another Connecticut man who was fatally stabbed at the Fryeburg Fairgrounds early Wednesday.

Maine State Police say Carlos A. Negron, 46, stabbed and killed Anderson Gomes, 28, of Waterbury. The two men knew each other, police said in a news release issued Wednesday afternoon. Police did not specify Negron’s hometown.

The Fryeburg Fair, which features carnival rides and games along with livestock exhibitions and agricultural displays, ended Sunday. Overnight camping is allowed at the fairgrounds.

The Oxford County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call around 1:05 a.m. Wednesday about a man who had been stabbed and was unresponsive. When officers arrived at the fairgrounds at 1154 Main St. they discovered Gomes’ body near a restroom facility.

The Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit was called in along with the Maine State Police Evidence Response Team. Detectives interviewed witnesses as well as persons of interest. Crime scene technicians and analysts gathered evidence throughout the morning and detectives arrested Negron around noon. He was transported to the Oxford County Jail, where he was charged with murder.

The state Medical Examiner’s Office is expected to conduct an autopsy of Gomes’ body in the coming days.

Negron and Gomes knew each other, and authorities are confident that there is no public safety risk. Police are not providing details about what may have provoked the killing or how the men gained access to the fairgrounds.

Officers from the Fryeburg Police Department, the Conway, New Hampshire, Police Department and the Bridgton Police Department also responded to the scene.
