Nancy Caperton, registered nurse, has been named Southern Maine Health Care’s 2021 Caregiver of the Year. Southern Maine Health Care made the announcement Nov. 2 in a news release.
According to the news release, “During a challenging year in health care Caperton has shined as she selflessly helped whenever and wherever needed with a positive attitude and an unwavering dedication to compassionate, patient-centered care.

Caperton consistently went above and beyond not just to care for her patients, but to support her fellow care team members by working in the areas of greatest need — living the SMHC vision of working together so our communities are the healthiest in America.
“Caperton’s dedication and flexibility is moving as she volunteered to work in areas with COVID-19 patients in the midst of the pandemic, including working in the COVID-19 Mental Health Unit, the Newton Center, COVID-19 results calling, Endoscopy, and both employee and community vaccine clinics.”
Suzanne Menard nominated Caperton for the honor and, in an email, said, “Nurses like Nancy are my healthcare heroes — always thinking about what is best for the patient, always willing to help take the stress off other members of the care team, and always responding to our requests for help graciously, and taking on every new responsibility with ownership and excellence.”
The Caregiver of the Year award is chosen based upon patient comments and peer recommendations throughout the organization. The recipient must meet the following criteria: exemplify extraordinary commitment to patients on a daily basis; show compassion, empathy and respect in the delivery of care to patients and their families; acknowledge and meet the unique physical, emotional and practical needs of patients and their families and; promote an environment of cooperation and collaboration in which the expertise and experience of all healthcare professionals are available to patients.
“Nancy embodies the standards of excellence attributed to this award every time she walks through the doors of SMHC and we are grateful for her devotion to our patients, communities, and care team,” said Nate Howell, president of Southern Maine Health Care, in an email.
