RICHMOND — A Freeport man died Wednesday after jumping from the Interstate 295 overpass in Richmond, injuring a tractor-trailer driver and temporarily forcing closure of the interstate’s southbound lanes, according to Maine State Police.

Police said late Wednesday the man, whom police did not identify, jumped at 3:35 p.m. from the overpass at Exit 43. He reportedly landed on the truck’s windshield.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Shannon Moss, public information officer for Maine Department of Public Safety. Police classified the incident as a suicide.

The driver of the tractor-trailer, a Pennsylvania man, was taken to the hospital with injuries not considered life-threatening, according to Moss.

The driver was able to stop his truck at the entryway to the southbound onramp at Exit 43.
