Right now, the state of Maine has an $800 million-plus budget surplus.

Money is pouring into the state to fix roads and bridges. Yet Maine levies a 30 cent-per-gallon excise tax, which (supposedly) goes to road construction and repair.

Can someone in Augusta tell Mainers why, with regular gas prices hovering near $4 per gallon, we can’t adjust the amount the state takes in taxes on every gallon?

The average price of one gallon of gas across Maine was $3.41 as of mid-January, the 14th highest price in the country, 24/7 Wall Street’s Samuel Stebbins reported via The Center Square. Taxes levied by Maine account for about 8.8 percent of the total cost of fuel.

Let’s reduce those taxes, Maine lawmakers, and help Mainers today.
