Re: “Letter to the editor: Elected officials are the wrong people to run Maine’s utilities” (Jan. 27):

Letter writer Donna Raymond’s description of the proposal for a consumer-owned utility to replace Central Maine Power and Versant Power is way off the mark.

The proposed consumer-owned utility will be governed by an independent board, elected to staggered terms by the people of Maine, and six expert advisory members chosen by the board. It will owe its allegiance to Maine ratepayers, not to a foreign-owned company focused exclusively on shareholder returns.

There are already 2,900 municipal and cooperative consumer-owned utilities serving 91 million Americans, including nine right here in Maine that serve 97 towns with cheaper and more reliable service than CMP or Versant. The five highest-rated utilities in the country are consumer-owned.

Check out the impressive ourpowermaine.org website for answers to your questions and to better understand the proposal. This is an incredible opportunity for Mainers served by CMP and Versant.

Ms. Raymond chides us to not be “gullible.” “Gullible” would be believing that CMP and Versant and their foreign-owned parent companies care about anything beyond shareholder returns.
