Recently, Sen. Susan Collins publicized her effort to update the Electoral Count Act (an 1887 law). Redefining the role of the vice president is important, but this effort falls well short of addressing the real issues associated with elections. It also has little or no chance of passing with the current Congress. I suppose she has to appear responsive to the pressure coming directly from her constituents and the daily letters and articles in Maine newspapers. Choosing this issue was a “safe” option.

The real issue, and the one that Angus King feels is the most important of his term as senator, is voting rights. As of Dec. 7, 19 states had passed 34 laws restricting access to voting. In addition, more than 440 bills with provisions that restrict voting access were introduced in 49 states in the 2021 legislative session.

We trust that Sen. Collins will reconsider her position and start working with Sen. King. Using the key provisions of the Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, a fair, well-defined law protecting voting rights and the democracy can be developed. Failure to address these issues and continued alignment with the Republican Party conflict with the oath she has taken. Unfortunately, the Republican Party today does not resemble the same party 25 years ago.

Maine senators have a history of “doing the right thing.” Let’s hope it continues.
