The front entrance of Maine Medical Center was closed for two hours Monday morning because of a report of a suspicious package.

The Portland Police Department responded just after 8:30 a.m. The Hazardous Devices Unit examined the item and determined it was not a threat. The scene was cleared at about 10:30 a.m.

Department spokesman David Singer said he could not immediately provide more information about the item.

Caroline Cornish, a spokeswoman for Maine Health, confirmed that the front entrance had been closed because of a suspicious package but referred other questions to the police.
