BANGOR — Caroline Bornemann made five 3-pointers and scored 17 points to lead the University of Maine to its eighth straight win, 71-56 over Hartford in women’s basketball Wednesday night at the Cross Insurance Center.
Four players scored in double figures for the Black Bears (14-10, 11-3 America East), who used an 8-0 run late in the second quarter to post a 31-24 halftime lead.
Alba Orois had 15 points for Maine, with Anne Simon chipping in with 12 and Maeve Carroll adding 10.
Paula Maurina had 18 points to lead Hartford (2-22, 2-11).
UNIVERSITY OF NEW ENGLAND 81, GORDON 37: Abby Cavallaro had 16 of her 24 points in the first quarter as the Nor’easters (16-8, 14-3 Commonwealth Coast) roared to a 34-6 lead and beat the Fighting Scots (10-13, 8-9) at Biddeford.
Jordyn Franzen had 15 points for UNE, and Kaylee Beyor had 12.
Ami Rivera had 15 points for Gordon.
SOUTHERN MAINE 66, UMASS-BOSTON 62: Michelle Rowe’s late-game free-throw shooting helped the Huskies (7-15, 6-7 LEC) stave off a comeback by the Beacons (7-13, 6-8) in Gorham.
Victoria Harris paced USM with 19 points and 13 rebounds. Rowe finished with 15 points and seven rebounds. Jackie Luckhardt had 13 points and five rebounds and Maria Degifico scored 12 points.
UMass-Boston was led by Jasharee Green with 19 points and five rebounds. Meg Dixon had 13 points and 11 rebounds. Keriann Farina had 12 and eight rebounds.
(7) BAYLOR 80, TCU 55: Queen Egbo and NaLyssa Smith both had double-doubles for the second game in a row and host Baylor (20-5, 10-3 Big 12) extended its three-decade winning streak over TCU (6-16, 2-11).
Egbo had her third consecutive double-double with 22 points and 13 rebounds, and also had three blocked shots. Smith had her 17th double-double of the season with 20 points and 10 rebounds.
TCU has lost 32 consecutive games in the series against the Bears since 1990.
(14) TEXAS 73, (6) IOWA STATE 48: Rori Harmon scored 20 points and host Texas (18-6, 8-5 Big 12) used a smothering defensive effort to beat Iowa State (21-4, 10-3), snapping the Big 12 leading Cyclones’ five-game win streak.
Audrey Warren added 16 points and four steals as she locked down Iowa State standout forward Ashley Joens over the first three quarters as Texas pulled away.
Joens scored 18 to become Iowa State’s career scoring leader, but struggled most of the game to find her shot and committed six turnovers. She now has 2,156, passing Angie Welle, who scored 2,149 from 1999-2002,
TEXAS TECH 97, (15) OKLAHOMA 87: Vivian Gray scored 35 points to reach 2,000 in her career, Taylah Thomas had 22 points and 13 rebounds and visiting Texas Tech (10-14, 3-10 Big 12) beat Oklahoma (20-5, 9-4) to snap a seven-game losing streak.
Gray, who was 12 of 24 from the field, entered needing 28 points to reach the milestone. She reached the mark on a 3-pointer early in the fourth quarter, the first of her 10 points in the quarter.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
HARTFORD 75, MAINE 65: Austin Williams had 21 points and seven rebounds to lead the Hawks (8-16, 6-6 AE)o ver the Black Bears (5-19, 2-12) in West Hartford, Connecticut.
Moses Flowers chipped in 14 points and six rebounds for Hartford. Traci Carter had 14 points, four rebounds and four assists and Briggs McClain added 12.
Maine was led by Stephane Ingo’s 10 points, 13 rebounds, two steals and four blocks. Maks Klanjscek finished with 11 points. Adefolalrin Adetogun and Jashonte Wright-Mcleish both scored 10 points.
GORDON 87, UNIVERSITY OF NEW ENGLAND 75: Bryan Smith had 11 of his 15 points late in the second half, making nine free throws down the stretch, as the Fighting Scots (10-12, 7-10 CCC) defeated the Nor’easters (6-18, 5-12) at Biddeford.
Garrett Sattazahn had 19 points to pace Gordon and Treyton Tebbs added 14.
Avery DeBrito led UNE with 16 points, Drake Gavin chipped in with 15.
UMASS-BOSTON 68, SOUTHERN MAINE 59: Charles Mitchell scored 22 points as the Beacons (11-12, 7-8 LEC) topped the Huskies (9-15, 4-11) at Gorham.
UMass-Boston’s Malik Lorquet added 16 points and eight rebounds. Michael Walsh had 11 and nine rebounds.
Simon Chadbourne paced USM with 20 points. Marcus Christopher posted 13 points.
RUTGERS 70, (12) ILLINOIS 59: Cliff Omoruyi had 15 points, 13 rebounds and a reverse alley-oop dunk in Rutgers’ game-breaking run as the host Scarlet Knights (16-9, 10-5 Big Ten) routed Illinois (18-7, 11-4) for their fourth straight win over a ranked team.
The run is the longest in school history for the Scarlet Knights, and there’s a chance to continue the streak with games next week at No. 5 Purdue and home against No. 15 Wisconsin. The last team to win four straight against ranked teams in the regular season was Michigan State in 2019-20.
Ron Harper Jr. added 16 points and eight rebounds and had the assist on Omoruyi’s second-half dunk. It was the second basket in a 12-0 run that ballooned the Scarlet Knights’ lead to 47-28. Paul Mulcahy added 13 points and Caleb McConnell had 11.
(24) UCONN 70, SETON HALL 65: Adama Sanogo had 20 points and 16 rebounds as host UConn (18-7, 9-5 Big East) beat Seton Hall (15-9, 6-8).
It was the sixth double-double of the season for Sanogo, the Huskies’ sophomore center. Tyrese Martin had 16 points and 10 rebounds for UConn.
(25) ALABAMA 80, MISSISSIPPI STATE 75: Jahvon Quinerly had 21 points and eight assists to lead host Alabama (17-9, 7-6 Southeastern Conference) over Mississippi State (14-11, 5-7).
DUKE: After feeling poorly and missing the second half of Duke’s 76-74 win over Wake Forest on Tuesday night, Coach Mike Krzyzewski spent Wednesday recuperating and is feeling well enough to return to work on Thursday.
“Coach is feeling a lot better,” Duke associate head coach Chris Carrawell said on the Duke basketball radio show Wednesday night.
The Blue Devils had a scheduled day off from practice on Wednesday. The 75-year-old Krzyzewski would normally go to his office to prepare for the next game. But he rested at home instead.
He’s planning to be at work Thursday, when the Blue Devils return to practice in preparation for Saturday’s home game against Florida State.
MEN’S HOCKEY
SOUTHERN MAINE 2, CASTLETON 1: Austin Marini put home a pass from Tyler Gardiner 2:06 into overtime to lead the No. 8 Huskies (8-13-1) past the ninth-seeded Spartans (5-19-2) in a New England Hockey Conference first-round playoff matchup at Gorham.
Cole Ouellette opened the scoring for Southern Maine with a goal midway through the first period and Castleton countered with a goal from Romeo Torain with 8:34 remaining in the second.
Kyle Penton for the Huskies and Kyle Alaverdy for the Spartans each finished with 37 saves.
Southern Maine will travel to Geneva, New York, to face top-seeded Hobart in a quarterfinal at 4 p.m. Saturday.
FOOTBALL
MICHIGAN: Coach Jim Harbaugh has agreed to a reworked five-year contract with the school that runs through the 2026 season.
The announcement of a new deal comes two weeks after Harbaugh interviewed to fill the head coaching vacancy with the Minnesota Vikings.
Financial terms of Harbaugh’s new deal were not released by the school. In a news release, Michigan said the terms and length of the deal Harbaugh signed last January were altered to include an additional year.
Harbaugh took to large pay cut last year after the Wolverines went 2-4 in the pandemic-abbreviated 2020 season. Michigan bounced back in 2021, winning the Big Ten for the first time since 2004 and earning the school’s first bid to the College Football Playoff.
