Judith “Judy” Ellen (Wilkinson) Garland

PORTLAND – Judy Garland, 70, of Portland, passed away peacefully on Feb. 14, 2022 after a brief illness at Maine Medical Center.

Born on April 9, 1951 in Portland, the daughter of the late John J. and Ellen M. Wilkinson, Judy grew up in South Portland as the second oldest in a lively household with seven siblings. She shared her birthday with her brother, Greg and sister, Peggy, all born on the same day, a year apart.

She graduated from South Portland High School in the class of 1969 and was part of a close group of friends who called themselves “the Sunshine Girls.” Judy had a smile with an infectious laugh that created instant friendships throughout her life.

Judy was previously married to Peter Garland Sr. who passed away in 2010. Being a mom to her son, Pete, was a highlight of Judy’s life. They had a truly special relationship and shared many common interests. He meant the world to her and she was always a priority in his life. Judy dearly loved her granddaughter, Athena, and always looked forward to their phone conversations and time spent together.

Judy was employed for many years by Rite Aid Pharmacy in Portland. In her retirement years, she volunteered at Lyseth Elementary School in Portland as part of the Foster Grandparent program, thriving on the interaction she had with the children and making a difference in their lives. She loved the times when she was outside of school and hearing little voices excitedly calling out, “Nana Judy, Nana Judy!”

Judy is survived by her son, Peter Garland Jr. of South Portland; her granddaughter, Athena MacDonald of Milton, N.H.; her two brothers, Gregory J. (Donna) and John M. Wilkinson, both of South Portland; her five sisters, Peg (Doug) Allen and Deb (Steve) Tewhey, both of Scarborough, Miriam (Bill) Norton of Biddeford, Barb (Norm) Swenson of Scotch Plains, N.J.; and Jackie Wilkinson of Deltona, Fla. She is also survived by 10 nieces and nephews, including her godson, Eric Swenson; and 10 great-nieces and nephews.

Judy used to call her sister, Barb, her guardian angel. Judy is now a guardian angel to all of her family. Judy will be so sadly missed by all who loved her.

A private service will be held by the family with a celebration of her life in the spring.
