When thousands of jobs were lost during the pandemic, the Maine Department of Labor greatly expanded its unemployment benefits program, ultimately delivering over $2.5 billion of state and federal funds to jobless residents.

But the state says some recipients failed to provide documents to prove they were eligible and now wants them to either supply that proof or return the money.
