“Scarborough Town Council Chokes!” Please don’t let this be the headline in local papers a year or two from now.

This architect’s rendering depicts various types of residential, commercial and recreational uses that the developers of The Downs have in mind for a town center in the heart of the 524-acre former harness racing facility. The Downs and Cube 3

I am a very provincial citizen of this area, but I can see the attraction of a development the Risbara Bros. are imagining for Scarborough Downs. If you are that person who says “no,” who doesn’t really like the plan, I’m guessing that you don’t live here and would not choose to move to Scarborough Downs.

My wife and I live here, and we wait with anticipation of the coming phases planned for The Downs. We’ve been to a few planned downtown areas such as the King of Prussia Town Center in Pennsylvania and  the Coconut Point mall in Estero, Florida, for instance, and see the excitement that can be possible with this type of development. There are shops, offices and living space all within those developments.

It may not be for everyone, yet it will be for those who want the excitement of a walkable community, where people can “work, shop and play.” Scarborough has so much to offer. There are traditional neighborhoods for those who want that. Is there room for more than just that?

Can the leaders of Scarborough see far enough into the future that The Downs could be the sustainable community of the future where we really do live, work and play? Let’s hope so.
