Carmen Dupuis Clifford

LEWISTON – Carmen Dupuis Clifford was born April 12, 1939, the second of four children to Lucien and Bernadette (Gilbert) Dupuis. She passed peacefully at her home in Lewiston in the presence of her loving family on March 3, 2022, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s Disease. Carmen attended Holy Family School and graduated from Lewiston High School in 1957. She married her high school sweetheart, Dr. David J. Clifford, on Sept. 8, 1962, at Holy Family Church. Carmen supported her husband while he was in podiatry school in Cleveland and during his residency at St. Luke’s Hospital in Philadelphia, from 1962 to 1967. They then returned to Lewiston where David began his podiatry practice and they raised their family. Carmen was a homemaker while raising four children.In the mid-1980s, she went to work at McMahon Elementary School as their librarian, where she loved reading aloud to the students, especially Ira Sleeps Over. She worked at the school until her retirement in 2001. She continued working in the school system as a substitute.Carmen was active in community affairs. She was a Patroness at St. Mary’s Hospital, served on the Lewiston Public School Board, and on the board for the Sarah Frye Nursing Home. She was an active parishioner in the Prince Of Peace Parish and served as a Eucharistic Minister. Carmen enjoyed serving as the chairperson for several reunions for her high school class of 1957. Carmen was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She enjoyed spending time with her family, going to the beach, traveling, gardening and attending the numerous sporting events of her children and grandchildren. Carmen is survived by her loving husband of nearly 60 years, Dr. David J. Clifford of Lewiston; her son, Thomas J. Clifford of Portland, daughter, Cathleen C. Clifford of Groton, Conn., daughter, Christine A. Clifford (Duane P. Egan) of Portsmouth, N.H. and son David M. Clifford of Lewiston; grandchildren William Winslow, Ashley Winslow (Cameron Mitiguy), Kimberly Clifford, Mason Blier, Morgan Blier (Daniel Simoneau), and Sophie Kollar; great-granddaughter, Nitalia Facchini; brothers-in-law, Father Richard Clifford and Justice Robert Clifford (Tookie Clifford), sister-in-law, Marjorie Clifford; and many loved nieces and nephews.She is predeceased by her parents; brother and sisters Richard Dupuis, Pauline Dupuis and Lorraine Martel. Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, March 9 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Pinette Dillingham and Lynch Funeral Home, 305 Alfred Plourde Pkwy, Lewiston. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at Prince of Peace Parish, Holy Family Church, at 11 a.m. on Thursday, March 10.
