A freight train blocked Greely Road in Cumberland for a few hours after coming to a hard stop early Sunday morning.

Residents heard a loud bang before the train stopped on the tracks around 5:45 a.m.

Cumberland Police Chief Charles Rumsey confirmed that the Pan Am freight train had stopped and was blocking the tracks, but that it was removed after police were notified it was there. Police said it’s not known why the train stopped, but that it happens from time to time.

Rumsey said to his knowledge there was no derailment.

A Pan Am Railways police worker, who did not give his name, said later Sunday that he heard the train had a mechanical problem that caused it to stop and which would cause train cars to bang into each other.
