Exit 46, the southbound off-ramp that connects traffic on the Maine Turnpike to the Portland International Jetport and Maine Mall in South Portland, was scheduled to be closed to traffic starting at midnight Sunday.

The closure on the heavily traveled off-ramp will remain in effect for five days, with reconstruction of the ramp expected to be completed by 12:01 a.m. Saturday, according to Erin Courtney, spokesperson for the Maine Turnpike Authority.

Construction crews will rebuild the ramp while adding culverts and drainage systems. The ramp will also be paved and striped.

Drivers are being asked to travel a bit farther south and use Exit 45 in South Portland, which connects with Maine Mall Road, during the Exit 46 closure.

In addition, the Exit 47 northbound off-ramp in Portland will be closed to traffic from July 18 through July 21, Courtney said. That closure is linked to the Portland-area widening project, which will result in the addition of a third travel lane – in both directions – extending from mile 46 to mile 49.

Variable message boards will be set up to alert drivers, and all of the work is weather-dependent.
