KENNEBUNK – Police in Kennebunk say thieves using a stolen truck broke into an automated teller machine outside Norway Savings Bank early Friday, July 22, and made off with all of the money inside.
Kennebunk police are asking the public for any information into the heist, which was discovered at 1 a.m. when the department was called to an ATM alarm activation at the bank, located at 68 Portland Road (Route 1).
“Upon arrival, officers found the ATM had been severely damaged,” said Deputy Police Chief Eric O’Brien in an email. “Officers found the deposit and cash drawers had been removed and an undisclosed amount of cash had been stolen.”
He said a search of the area turned up an abandoned truck near the bank, which was used in the theft and, as it turns out, stolen from a garage in nearby Arundel.
The thieves used a chain, crowbar, and the truck to gain access to the ATM, O’Brien said in a telephone interview.
“Officers and detectives are following up on leads that have been presented and are working in conjunction with the FBI’s Portland office and York County Sheriff’s Office,” said O’Brien.

O’Brien said thieves made away with cash from an ATM at a local store a few years ago, and there have been similar thefts around New England in recent months. In March, the Times Record in Brunswick reported thieves stole a van from a Brunswick nonprofit, chained the trailer hitch to the ATM, pulled the door open and stole all the cash inside. A similar attempt failed in Framingham, Massachusetts, when an individual was unable to gain entry to the machine, according to Framinghamsource.com.
