Cemetery wall needs repair
The stone wall at the village cemetery, which contains the graves of many of Gorham’s oldest families, is due for a facelift.
Chunks of mortar and stone have fallen from the structure and the town is seeking proposals to effect repairs at South Street Cemetery at 43 South St.
In 1770, Jacob Hamblen gifted land for the cemetery, which contains graves of the town’s founding families, with names like Phinney, McLellan, Harding and Hamblen.
Bids must be received on or before 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 30, at the town hall, or mailed in sealed envelopes and marked “Stone Wall Repair – 2022” to Town Manager Ephrem Paraschak, 75 South St., Gorham, ME 04038. Electronic bids will not be accepted.

Bus routes posted
New school bus routes for the 2022-23 school year are posted on the Gorham School Department’s website at gorhamschools.org and can be viewed by clicking on” District Info”.
50 years ago
The American Journal reported Aug. 23, 1972, that the West Gorham Community Club was sponsoring swimming lessons at a swimming hole called “the project.” Margaret Hague was the instructor.
U.S. taxpayer debt
The Bureau of the Fiscal Service reported on Aug. 18 that the U.S. public debt was $30,729,913,543,818.69.
