The first day of the 2022-23 school year for students who would normally attend Dike Newell Elementary School will be Tuesday, Sept. 6, at the building that formerly housed the Bath Technical Center at 826 Shipbuilder Drive in Bath.

The change in venue came after an alleged arsonist set fire to the school June 11, rendering the building unusable.

To help ease the transition, first- and second-grade students will begin classes on Tuesday, kindergarten will start Thursday and pre-K will begin attending classes the following week.

The plan going forward is to demolish the unsalvageable sections of the Dike Newell building, but attempt to save the kindergarten/first-grade wing for future use. Regional School District 1 plans to eventually build a new elementary school, according to school officials.
